The ultrapure water plant is an initiative by NieuWater B.V., a joint venture by the Water Supply Company Drenthe (WMD) and the Velt & Vecht Water Board. The plant upgrades treated sewage to ultrapure water. The choice of source water, the size of the production operation and the innovative combination of water treatment technologies make the ultrapure water plant unique. NieuWater supplies ultrapure water to the energy company Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij B.V. (NAM). NAM heats the ultrapure water to create steam that is being used in the redevelopment of the Schoonebeek oil field.
